GATHERING TO HEAR GOD'S CALL

Prelude:   Adagio Cantabile    F J Haydn

   Welcome and Announcements

   Interlude

  *Call to Worship:

Leader:       Come, worship the Christ, a living stone,
rejected by mortals but precious in God’s sight.

People:    We are like living stones
being used in building the spiritual temple,
                    with Christ as our cornerstone.

Leader:     We will offer spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ,

People:    for we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood,
a holy nation, God’s own people.

Leader:     Once we were no people,
but now we are God’s people.

People:    Therefore, we declare the mighty acts of God,
who calls us out of darkness into his marvelous
                    light.

We will be priests of good news
                    and serve each other,
                    with Christ as our example.

WELCOME to Eighth Street Mennonite Church!  May you experience God's presence in this time of worship and fellowship.  Visitors are invited to sign the guest book in the narthex and to worship with us again.

There is a River

There is a river, flowing from a distant land
Through the desert, through the blowing, barren sands
To the Jordan, pouring through the Baptist's hands.
There is a river,
There is a river.

There is a mountain, where the nations learn of peace
On her pathways, where all war and hatred cease.
Climbing higher, spirits grow and fears release.
There is a mountain,
There is a mountain.

There is a city, where the gates are open wide
For all to enter; there is room enough inside
To live together without envy, fear, or pride.
There is a city,
There is a city.

Follow the river – you'll be restless if you stay –
Climb the mountain, find companions on the way
To the city, where you're welcome night and day.
There is a city,
There is a mountain,
There is a river.

THE MCC MEAT CANNING schedule has Eighth Street assigned for this Wednesday, Jan. 23.  Volunteers are needed.  See Don Klippenstein for details.

From the Sidelines:

Other than a record crowd of Eighth Street fans, there were few highlights in Eighth St.'s loss to North Goshen Mennonite 42-26 in Church League basketball last Saturday afternoon.  The record crowd was seven fans which included Brenda's three kids.  It was the first time this season that Eighth St.'s fans could be counted on more than one hand.  For next Sunday's 2pm game against Silverwood, the first 500 fans will be admitted free.  Come on out and support your team and help Eighth St. break its four game losing streak!

THE EIGHTH STREET PASTORS will be hosting the Central District Michiana Pastor-Peer group this Tuesday at 9am in the church parlor.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Study Day at Goshen College, Monday, January 21 beginning at 7am with many available workshops.  See poster and schedule on bulletin board.

MEN'S LUNCHEON, this Thursday, Jan. 24 at Ramada Inn at 11:45am.  John Nyce will lecture on "Quantum Physics for Dummies."

AN ORGAN CONCERT in honor of Jacob J. Enz will be performed by Shirley Sprunger King on Tuesday, Jan. 29, beginning at 7:30pm in the Chapel of the Sermon on the Mount at AMBS.  Shirley, who is professor of music at Bethel College, N. Newton, KS, has been a long-time friend of the Enz family and because she could not attend Jacob Enz's funeral in early September, she is offering this tribute to the AMBS professor emeritus now.  She has selected music to celebrate and affirm life and will include some congregational singing.  For information contact AMBS, 574 295-3726.

ATTENTION, all quilters:  Join other quilters at Bethany Christian Schools every Tuesday and Thursday from 9am-3pm to finish a quilt for the annual Fun Fest fund raiser which will be held March 15 and 16.  Lunch is provided.  Please call Amy at BCS at 534-2567 if you plan to stay for lunch.

A GUIDE TO PRAYER:  Pray for the staff of Mennonite Voluntary Service as they begin their work as part of Mennonite Church USA beginning February 1.  Pray for guidance and wisdom during this time of transition from the current MVS program to the new.  Pray for the volunteers as they learn to relate to the new staff.

JANUARY GIVING BOX:  Each year the preschool receives requests for financial assistance from families who want their child to attend preschool but simply feel they cannot afford to pay full tuition.  This year we have given scholarships to six families.  These families' needs are quite varied--their struggles vary from legal difficulties or injuries that leave only one parent available to earn an income, to parents who have left a drug-influenced inner city setting to give their child better opportunities.  We welcome your financial contributions to make these tuition scholarships available.  Thank you for the support you've already given us; we hope your support will continue.
